Amateur Radio License examination sessions are held by the Maury Amateur Radio Club for anyone wishing to obtain or upgrade their FCC Amateur Radio License. Our Volunteer Examiner team is accredited by the W5YI VEC.
We ask that if you are interested in taking a license exam with us that you preregister to guarantee a seat. This ensures we have enough volunteer examiners or hand to administer the exam. Anyone who does not preregister will be considered a "walk-in" and mist wait until app preregistered applicants have been seated.
After the exam, we submit the results electronically to the W5YI-VEC, who then files them with the FCC. In most cases, successful test candidates will have their results show up in the FCC database within 1-2 business days.
Exam Session Dates: we usually hold exam sessions on the 3rd Saturday of every odd-numbered month. The next exam session will be held July 19, 2025.
Exam Session Time: 9:00 AM.
Exam Location: the July session will be held at South Gate Church of Christ, 2700 Pulaski Highway, Columbia TN 38401.
$14 exam fee; candidates younger than 18 pay a reduced fee of $7. We accept cash or checks made payable to "Maury Amateur Radio Club."
Your FCC Registration Number (FRN).

If you are an existing Amateur Radio license holder upgrading to General or Extra, please bring a copy of your current license (not the CSCE).
You may bring a calculator, but you must clear the memory prior to taking an exam. Cell phones or tablets may not be used as calculators, and we ask that they be turned off or put in silent mode prior to entering the exam room.
We will provide pencils and scratch paper.
Note: we are currently switching from paper exams to computer based testing using ExamTools. We have 5 computers available for testing, so we can test a maximum of 5 candidates at a time. If there is a wait for a computer, you have the option of taking a paper exam if you wish.
The initial exam fee pays for one attempt at each of the three exam elements. If a candidate fails an element and wants to re-test for the same element, an additional fee will be required.
Effective April 19, 2022 the FCC will charge a $35 fee for NEW license applications (not for upgrades to General or Extra class). This fee will be paid directly to the FCC once you pass your exam; we do not collect this fee at the test session.
